Getting into Web3: Marketing Edition

In a recent #Makingtheleap AMA session, Imran, Head of Marketing at Kyber Network, and Wan Wei, Head of Ecosystem at Multiverse Labs, shared their insights on making the career jump into Web3, the differences between Web2 and Web3 marketing, and the future of marketing in the Web3 space.

Here are the key takeaways from the session:

  1. Main considerations when making the career jump into Web3:

  • Look at where growth will be in the next decade: crypto/Web3 is currently the industry with the largest growth potential.

  • Strong beliefs and excitement in the industry: believing in the decentralization of the industry and the fundamentals of the philosophy of crypto is important.

  • Finding out if the industry matches your personal character: the open-source nature of things in Web3 and the intellectual challenges it presents could be a good fit.

  • Consider your practical needs: while the industry has high growth potential, it also comes with higher risks.

  1. How marketing is different between Web2 and Web3:

  • More challenging to define "customer profiles" in Web3. Users do not need to go through a sign-up process or do KYC to open up an account.

  • New ways of reaching customers are required (airdrops, whitelisting, etc.)

  • Web3 has a much smaller user market size, and user demographics and beliefs are different.

  • In Web3, the product you are selling is not so clear, and KPIs and marketing budget considerations are different.

  1. How marketing will evolve in the future of Web3:

  • Marketing will evolve alongside changes in business models.

  • The constant evolution of the industry means that all mechanisms of marketing and interacting with users will also evolve.

  • Changes in the Web3 space will only intensify over time, and marketing will have to evolve along with the industry changes.

  • An estimated 1 billion people over the next 10 years will get into crypto and DeFi.

  • The new users coming into the Web3 space will be less tech-savvy and expect Web3 to function and look like Web2.

The biggest tip for someone trying to enter the Web3 industry is to stay curious and keep learning. The industry is constantly evolving, and staying updated with the latest trends and developments is crucial. Additionally, building a strong network within the industry and being willing to take risks are also important.
